*At the time I taught Texas Government in a community college, the state legislature was considering a law allowing concealed carry of handguns on campus (it passed). I asked students to write a paper weighing the pros and cons of the proposed law. The following is a composite paper consisting of sentences taken verbatim without corrections from their submissions. An * denotes contributions by the adjunct professor (me).
INTRODUCTION
When the rest of the American population hear of Texas, three things come to their mind, The Dallas Cowboys, Barbeque, and most importantly, guns.
Anyway, Texas is notorious for its stereotypical image. Cowboys on their horses, looking out at their cattle herds, one hand on the reins, and the other on that silver gun in the holster, ready for a shoot out at the old saloon. Though that thing in the cowboys holster – that beautiful weapon of mass destruction – is still one of the biggest controversies in the Lone Star State.
It seems today, that the issue on gun control has been a very hot topic in the political arena. Ranging from that state level, to the federal level. In 2016, American politics seem to be at a pivotal and potentially detrimental point. Texas being a notoriously pro-gun state, has taken measure in recent years to flew its opinion on 2nd amendment rights by introducing new laws that encourage gun ownership.
Concealed weapons is the repetition of carrying a weapon (handguns), in public in an obscure method. Having a gun on hand is both a reassuring and deceiving to the people and it’s surroundings.
There is many different views on this subject and there is two major groups that have their opinions. Which will lead to many disagreements of the people but will also receive the approval of others. Is it safe or dangerous to withheld concealed weapons in America? Carrying concealed weapons can benefit and avoid in harmful states.
The 84th legislature is now in session. You know what that means, representatives from all over Texas are convening, passing and not passing bills into laws. Which is basically right around the corner. Which effects all Texans in the many ways as all laws do.
In order to create an opinion on this topic it is imperative that we fully understand what SB11 law is about and what it will do. The Senate Bill 11 allows individuals with a concealed handgun license as long as the weapon is not visible. Of course, certain pre-requisites have to be met in order for an induvial to carry fire arm on campus. College is not much different than real world places because there are the same dangerous situations and are usually ill prepared.
Now that we saw several different opinions and got a better understanding of the SB11 law it, would be most antiquate that we as the audience come up with our own proper opinion regarding this law.
PRO
Why are so many people against the law?
Three young men were leaving their class and an altercation happened between them and a group of drunken fraternity men. Words were spilled and bullets were spreading everywhere. Maybe the young men and the drunks both had concealed carry handguns.
*Maybe the drunks had concealed carry handguns but the young men did not. Maybe the young men had concealed carry handguns but the drunks did not. Maybe somebody got killed or maybe not. Maybe they all were just bad shooters and that is why the bullets were spreading everywhere. We do not know. All we know is that words were spilled and bullets were spreading everywhere and that’s why everybody should have concealed carry hand guns because able minded students should be allowed the right to carry concealed weapons on a college campus. In conclusion, someone needs to wipe up the spilled words.
This shows conclusively that is not their biggest concern but it also could provide a prevalent rebuttal. So be prepared.
So if you took everyone’s guns away, there would be no more killings. HA!
Passing this bill will cause a huge rising in gun sales.
CON
Now, in 1971 we did pass the Second Amendment. But now and days we have crazy people and sometimes that amendment should not be used. A guy can kill many others at the same time which cannot be overruled.
Now what would a gun really cause? It would cause bullets to fly about and there be a shoot out on campus. Which, in the end would cause people to get injured, or even worse, deceased. If all Texans could open carry without any type of licensing, how could one distinguish a person with malleous intent?
I would not fully trust a gun by me.
Not passing this bill will cause a huge rising in gun sales.
IMPLANTATION
Students want to feel safe and state their right and opinions, while anyone getting mad and want revenge The final action that needs to be taken for implantation, is that every person who decides to carry a concealed weapon should have a different type of identification.
There should be a way of checking if people are following all of specific the college implead requirements.
Then there is the undeclared point when showing places that states who do not agree with the senate bill could go to feel “safe.” There may be declared points but that is beyond the scope of this paper.
CONCLUSION
Supporters and non-supporters, don’t get too excited. In essence, concealed carry is both a big deal and not at the same time.
Either way you cut it the main goal is to find a way to keep students as safe as possible on campus.
